DEPARTING FRANCE

The order comes out the second day after the Tuileries is sacked:
PACK UP, GET READY TO MOVE OUT. WE'VE DONE ALL WE CAN HERE.

DEPLOYMENT: BASE. WE NEED TO RESTOCK. BE PREPARED FOR MORE TRANSFERS ON ARRIVAL.

STAY SAFE. TIME-STEP EXPECTED TO BEGIN WITHIN THE HOUR. FOR THOSE OF YOU NEW TO COST: FIND A SECLUDED SPOT, AND TRY NOT TO EAT ANYTHING BEFORE THE JUMP.

The Time-Step

The transfer begins, and it starts like a vibrating heat on the collar bone, not painful, not to start with. Just a hum of sensation. But the vibration spreads. Veteran COST soldiers often refer to this phenomena as 'the buzz'. The sensation builds, feeling not unlike standing near a great engine, or the wind rattling the branches of a great tree. There is long a moment of motion sickness, and one cannot always be sure if it is you that is shaking from the inside out, or the world that is shaking you from the outside in. It may just be better to close your eyes against the growing nausea as the world blurs out of focus. A star shines in the distance. You may hear the faint rustling of leaves. Some swear they hear voices in this moment, indistinct words echoing off nothingness. Some swear they feel a touch of the divine; the eyes of the eternal look down upon you. Ancient bones rattle just out of earshot, cold and brittle. Or maybe it's an illusion brought on by powerful technology grafted into your skin.

One thing is for sure: One moment you are here, and the next, you are not.

Nausea is commonly accompanied by this shift. One moment, you're in the cold of France. The next, you're in a temperature regulated hallway, looking not unlike a very poorly put together space station. Droids rush up and down the long hallway, fixing broken bits of machinery or just chattering with each other. Crows sit on high ledges, looking down, watching.

(For those of you who just apped in and didn't participate in the TDM, you'll appear alongside your comrades now, standing in this long hallway filled with droids and crows and men and women in clothing from 18th century France. Of course, you'll be wearing the minimal COST athletic issued underwear, and holding whatever one item you were allowed to bring. Surprise!)

At the end of the hall is a long table with heaps of used clothing on it. The sizes and styles vary, along with color and detail (AKA none look exactly like the linked pics, they're just a baseline, use your ~imagination~). One thing's for certain, all the clothing has been used before, with holes darned and worn edges. They're all clean, though, and each bears a single patch with the words 'KNOW YOUR RIGHTS, THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN' and 'COST sewn into the side.

They're not exactly high fashion, but they might be more comfortable than the late 18th century digs you're still wearing, if you showed up in France. Or, you know, the underwear.

Meet the Drill Sergeant

There is the echoing sound of hooves, and a strange creature emerges from a nearby room: a centaur. He smiles kindly, happy to see you've arrived. He has a significant limp in his back left leg, causing his hoof-beats to pitch an irregular rhythm as he walks slowly through the hall.

"Hello, all!" His voice is kind, but it's pitched to carry. "You may know me as Sergeant-- I am in technicality a drill sergeant. You may call me Chiron, if you wish, though I'm to understand some may know others with the same name." He laughs, amused. "In any case, welcome home. It is not much, but we have tried to make it hospitable for you in your time here. Your room assignments have been uploaded onto your BCEs, along with some technological upgrades we've been testing out. There are a few prototypes and experiments you may find in your rooms as well. Our agents are..." He looks up at the crows. "We are a curious people."

He looks over to the table stacked with clothing. "Please pick out what suits you, and make adjustments as needed. If you have any complaints, and wish to change your rooming situation, your username, anything of that nature, please send me a request. I am also known in some capacity as a trainer-"

One of the crows caws, and it sounds almost sarcastic.

Sergeant Chiron ignores it. "Hm. If you wish for me to make a training regiment for you, to better your skill in this organization, please let me know. But for now: I am to understand your last mission was... tumultuous. Please, rest and acclimate yourself to BASE."

He turns to leave, before stopping-- "And please be kind to the crows. They remember slights."

The crows' cawing sounds like laughter.

HOTSPOTS

There's been some technical difficulty since the prognosticators had their little meltdown. Coolant is in short supply, and some of the corridors of BASE are a little warmer than others. Pleasantly warm. Comfortably so, like walking through a sunbeam. In these hotspots, it feels comfortable and snug.

Characters walking through them will feel the urge to lie down and rest, maybe take a quick little nap.

Sleeping in these spots will cause unsettling or confusing dreams, but not nightmares. Dreams in these hotspots-- and sleeping in these hotspots will never be dreamless-- will be hard to remember upon waking, but they seemed very... strange. Almost as though you were intruding on something important but private.

Yet you can't quite remember it when you wake.

If you're clever and watchful, you'll notice the crows avoid these areas, so you can avoid them as well before you're seized by the urge to lie down and nap.

Particularly watchful characters may notice the hotspots are growing in size and number as the days wear on.

(More information about these and the forthcoming December plot will be coming in an infopost on the 12th, but if you have any questions now, feel free to ask here!)

Uh huh. [She says this slowly while she stares at him oddly, all with a tone that makes it obvious that she thinks a little bit too far on the paranoid side. Which was honestly saying something, coming from her perspective.

Still, he's probably been here longer than her, so she's still listening. Well enough, in fact, that she somehow still catches what he says, when his tone lowers a little. So he thinks it's something outside? Come to think of it, she hadn't bothered to take a look yet. And honestly? What did she have to lose to take a peek?

As it turned out, the only thing she gathered from it was not knowing what the fuck she was even looking at.]

Ooookayyy. [Because honestly, how else could one react to seeing something like... whatever the fuck it was outside.]

So, lemme get this straight. You think there's something just kinda... hanging out there?

(whatever it is, this aether the bce calls it, it's dangerous... but he didn't spend his entire life studying the sky only to freeze up now.

shinobu leans in to take a look and he's sure something will come of it. not just because it has to for him to feel safe in his own head, but because he won't have to be the only one who is forced to break the news to others. the people on the ship need to know — and coming from hei alone, those words won't mean a hell of a lot.
)

It's possible. (anything is, up here, out here, wherever and whenever they are.) I was looking out and something was looking in. You can't feel anything?

...

I was standing here for some time.

[At this point, Shinobu isn't sure if this man is fucking nuts or maybe has some kind of ability that she herself most definitely did not have. Maybe both. In her experience, it was probably both.]

If something can live in that, in the open, they're a way more powerful being than you or I. [She says this in a kind of flippant manner, though Shinobu also doesn't quite discount his opinion on this either.] My point being, even if there is something watching us out there, what can we even do about it? I dunno about you, but I'm not dealing with that damned fever dream outside.

[Killing multiple people at once was no big deal for her, but dealing with that shit went way beyond her power level.]

(fair enough of a guess, if it is one being and not a collective. such things make him think of eldritch horrors, the limited knowledge he has on it never having read short story or book on it. just knows the name as something alien and dubious and his imagination's always been an overactive one.

the stare he aims at shinobu is a lengthy one, not quite sure what to make of her.
)

If there is something or someone... we might not be able to fight it, but it's aware of us. At least now we're aware of it.

(whatever it is, if it's even an it.)

[Shinobu was never one to shy away from a stare, so she meets his glance, frowning a bit as she folds her arms. This pretty much sounded like the plot of one of those silly magical girl shows she watched when she was younger (and might still hold a bit of nostalgia for, but she'll never admit that in her life) and she was honestly not sure what to make of it. Did this guy watch too many ominous movies? Or was he actually onto something? Probably a bit from both columns, again.]

Yeah, sure. [Shinobu waves a dismissive hand.] So, just make sure not to do anything stupid or embarrassing, right?

There's nothing rational in either of those options. For what purpose would I try them?

(someone's not too fond of jokes.

still, she's giving him the benefit of her doubt — despite waving him off like that. did she even feel anything looking out the window? she didn't stare for too long, she couldn't have sensed the same thing. still, midnighter's suggestion stands out starkly in the moment: don't create unnecessary panic, they can take care of things.

hm.
)

If you don't believe me, it's fine. Just stay wary of the aether.

Hey, I don't know you. Maybe you're the kind of person into that embarrassing crap, who knows?

[Look, one glance was all she needed with whatever was outside. It was some weird kind of shit and Shinobu didn't want to stare at it longer than she had to. Perhaps later, she might take a longer gander at it. But for now? No way.]

If you're referring to the crap outside, believe me, I'm plenty fucking wary. Not gonna stand there staring at it, though. That would make anyone nuts.

You're right.

(wow, it's a miracle. she is, though — standing here is pointless for the both of them. it's high time he changes his tune and conforms for now.)

I should be getting some clothes. I don't know what's left, but I can't stay in this.

No shit. Arriving here in just about nothing was still somehow better than what you guys were – or still are – wearing. Staring at whatever that is, with those clothes is a recipe for disaster.

[Shinobu was being a little purposefully over-dramatic here, but she was unwittingly right in some way, at least about the aether.]

Take a walk, at least.

Ah. We woke up in France like that. (next to naked, standing before a woman with far too much information to drop on their heads so soon after transport.) They took everything, though I'd sooner blame it on the time slippage.

(she's right, though; staying by this window is a recipe for disaster. the clothes have nothing to do with it, but the ones laid out on the tables look comfier than the assortment he has on, moving forward a few steps to examine it all critically.

Yeah, that really blows [About everything being taken – she could get by, as long as she had her katana, which was still on her even now, but it still sucked.] Hopefully, we can go to somewhere a whole lot recent next.

[By now, she had already picked over what clothes she wanted, so she just follows Hei to the table. Shinobu gives him an odd look, because of his question, but still complies anyway.] Shinobu. Do you normally ask someone's name without giving yours first?

rather, demanding, but not in this case. he's distracted in mind and body as he sorts through articles and chooses the things that might be cobbled together to make something useful. doesn't take him long, doesn't much care about the aesthetics of it all.

That's lame as hell.

[But, at the very least, Shinobu wasn't even her birth name, she didn't really give a shit how many people knew her alias anyway.

But whatever, she didn't know if this guy was over his paranoia spell yet, but maybe pointing him in a direction to walk in would make him calm down a bit? No, probably not, but at least she wouldn't have to deal with him anymore.]

Uh-huh. Hope you calm your ass down, in the meantime.
